Metfield
We have a Church, a pub, a village hall AND we still have a village shop - run by the community for the community.
At the time of the 1841 census, when the populations of most rural East Anglian parishes were beginning to reach their peak, the village had more than 700 residents, and could boast a surgeon, a schoolmaster, a tailor, a bricklayer, an inn and two beerhouses, three shoemakers, two butchers and three grocers. White's 1844 directory notes that Mrs Susan Godbold has resided in the parish for 80 years, and walked round the village on her 104th birthday, Sept 14th 1843. A century later, Arthur Mee found her gravestone while poking around in the churchyard, and noted that she had died at the remarkable age of 105. (Information from www.suffolkchurches.co.uk)
During World War II an airfield was built just outside Metfield for use by the USAAF 491st Bomb Group and the 353rd Fighter Group. On 15 July 1944 the bomb dump blew up, detonating over 1,000 tons of bombs and explosive, killing five men and wrecking five B-24 bombers. |

Watch it! At ‘The Willows’ farm, Metfield, Mr Stanley Loane tidies the straw-thatching and Mr Tom Godbold, uses a scythe to trim and neaten the edges of the straw. A roof-top display of the words 'seed', 'time', 'and', 'harvest', 'shall', 'not', and 'cease', created using thatch material, are shown, which read together form part of a biblical quotation.

Metfield is the centre of everywhere. Good news for the 2012 Olympics. Easy access to train stations. An hour and a half and you are in Liverpool Street Station in London.
If you love long walks then we have many of them around the village and over the World War II airbase. If you love visits to the local market towns then Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth, Harleston, Diss and Eye are on your doorstep.
If you like the excitement and shopping of big cities and towns - you can get to Ipswich, Norwich and Bury St Edmunds in under an hour
If the seaside appeals you can go back in time to Southwold or Aldeburgh or take your bucket and spade to Gt Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
If you love history and architecture Suffolk is festooned with beautiful churches including 3 gorgeous examples in Metfield, Withersdale and Linstead villages. Sutton Hoo (an Ango-Saxon burial ground) is just up the road at Woodbridge. Magnificent Castles at Framlingham and Orford as well as Norwich.
If it's art and culture - then we have theatres at Bungay and Southworld and an Arts venue known as The Cut in Halesworth. The Latitude festival is just up the road at Henham and Halesworth hosts the 'Gig in the Park' every August. And of course the world reknown festivals at Aldeburgh and Snape.
Rivers and Wildlife? We are on the cusp of the Broads. We have good fishing locally at Weybread Pits and birds aplenty throughout the area and especially at Minsmere Nature Reserve on the coast.
If excellent food is your thing we have pubs and restaurants galore. Halesworth just 7 miles down the road offers Indian, Thai, Italian and Chinese as well as the usual English fare.
